Burning Yacht Kills Elderly Man In San Pedro

Firefighters found the man in critical condition aboard a 70-foot yacht that had caught fire.

SAN PEDRO, CA – A man found on a burning yacht at Los Angeles Harbor in San Pedro was removed from the fiery boat by Los Angeles city firefighters, but later died at the hospital, authorities said Monday.

The fire was reported at 10:08 p.m. Sunday on a 70-foot yacht at Berth 33 near 22nd and Miner streets, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Amy Bastman. The patient was in critical condition when taken to a hospital.

It took 47 firefighters 27 minutes to put out the flames, Bastman said. There was no immediate information on how the fire started.

The deceased patient was described as a 65-year-old man and the cause of death was believed to have been smoke inhalation, said coroner's Investigator Jerry McKibben.
