RANCHO PALOS VERDES, CA — Residents woke up to a large crane ship and barge off the coast of Rancho Palos Verdes Friday near Trump National Golf Club. The ship and barge are related to the Palos Verdes Reef Restoration Project, Rancho Palos Verdes city officials announced.

The crane and barge will apparently be in the area for the next 40 to 60 days.

"The City was not informed of when work for this project would commence and has reached out to the appropriate agencies for more information," according a city news release.

This project by the Southern California Marine Institute aims to restore fishing resources that were destroyed by decades of chemical dumping off the coast, the city said in a news release. The project was approved by the California State Lands Commission in 2018 and the California Coastal Commission in 2019.

The City reportedly opposed the project due to its proximity to DDT- and PCB-laden sediments in the Santa Catalina Channel, and the potential for restored reefs to be covered by silt from the toe of the active Portuguese Bend Landslide.
