Peninsula Boys JV Takes on Mighty Bishop Montgomery in Non-League Tilt

Bishop Montgomery Rides a Strong First Quarter To A Victory Over Peninsula JV Boys.

On Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 PM the Peninsula Boys JV Team took on the Mighty Bishop Montgomery Knights in a non-league contest at Peninsula HS. The Panthers had not played since 11-28-15 when they wrapped up the Westchester Tip-Off Tournament. The long delay showed and the Panthers struggled mightily from the field as they were unable to convert on a number of lay-up attempts and most of their shots were coming up short. The Knights on the other hand were shooting exceptionally well and did not miss many of their shots. The Panthers ended the first quarter of play down 24-5.

The 2nd quarter began and Bishop Montgomery came out and appeared as hot as they were before the quarter ended by hitting a 3 pointer to put the Panthers down 27-5. The Panthers however began to find their footings and some of the shots began to fall. The Panthers also seemed to step up their defensive pressure and they began to force Bishop Montgomery into some unforced errors and turnovers. The Panthers were able to out score the Knights by a margin of 16-13 in the 2nd quarter and as the first half ended the Panthers were beginning to show some signs of life.

The 3rd quarter began and the Panthers came out hungry and aggressive and scored the first couple of baskets to close the gap to 10. The Knights then responded by going on a run of their own and again pushed the lead up to 55-37 as the 3rd quarter ended. The Panthers again seemed out of sorts and foul trouble with the Panthers “big men” started to take its toll as the Panthers struggled mightily against the taller and more aggressive Bishop Montgomery players.

The 4th quarter began and the two teams traded baskets and with less than 3 minutes remaining in the game, Nick Frasso became hot from 3 point range as did Won’ya Singleton and they were able to close the margin to 13. The Panthers just did not have enough time to over come the lead that the Knights had raced out to and the game ended with the Panthers losing to Bishop Montgomery 68-55. The Panthers were led by Won’ya Singleton with 19 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist and 1 steal, Nick Frasso added 17 points, 5 rebounds, 1 blocked shot and Jack Engstrom added 10 points, 1 rebound, and 5 steals. The Panthers next game is Tuesday December 15th, 2015 at 4:30 PM at the Peninsula High School Gym against North Torrance. The Panthers now stand at 2-3 on the season.
