Peninsula Boys JV Takes On Mighty Inglewood in a Bay League Contest

Peninsula Panthers Face Inglewood Sentinels after week of final exams in Bay League Tilt

On 1-22-16 at 4:30 PM the Peninsula Panthers JV Boys Basketball team took on Bay League foe Inglewood Sentinels at the Peninsula HS gym. The Panthers who had just finished a week of final exams came out and appeared to be in a fog as the 1st quarter got underway and they played very sloppy and uninspired defense. The Panthers were matching the Sentinels bucket for bucket but there defense was missing. Inglewood enjoyed being able to shoot wide open uncontested shots for most of the 1st quarter. The Panthers were able to lead 19-17 as the 1st quarter ended.

The 2nd quarter began with the Panthers again being lethargic on the defensive end of the floor and the Sentinels used this ton their advantage as they went up by 5 points midway through the quarter. The Panthers appeared to be getting some of their footing back as Junior Nick Frasso began attacking the offensive glass and putting up numerous shots scoring 10 points in the quarter to lead the Panthers. The Panthers were able to finally put a very small run together to end the 1st half with a 35-32 lead.

The Panthers came out in the beginning of the 3rd quarter and you could see that some of the cob webs had cleared from their heads and they began to buckle down on the defensive end of the court. They began to attack the backboards on both ends of the court and their running game seemed to take ground. Freshman Jack Engstrom lead all scorers in the quarter putting up 11 points, while fellow freshman Dominic Blanco and Won’ya Singleton each added 4 points apiece. The 3rd quarter coma to an end with the Panthers leading the Sentinels by the score of 59-45.

The 4th quarter began and it was apparent that the Panthers had finally shaken all of the cob webs from their heads after being in exams all week and they began to pull away from the Sentinels. The Panthers were getting easy fast break lay-ups and their defense picked up significantly and the Sentinels were suddenly only getting one look at the basket and they were missing shots that they had made in the first half of the game. The Panthers went up by as many as 28 when substitutions began making their way onto the court. The Panthers struggled against the Sentinels press in the latter part of the game but by then the outcome had been determined and the Panthers outscored the Sentinels 17-17 to win by a final score of 86-62.

The Panthers are now 12-4 on the season and have a mark of 4-0 in the league. They will travel down the hill to Palos Verdes High School on Tuesday, 1-26-16, to face the Palos Verdes Sea Kings for a rare 3:00 PM game due to Palos Verdes not having a JV Girls Team. The Panthers were led in scoring tonight by freshman Jack Engstrom with 23 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks, Junior Nick Frasso added 17 points, 9 rebounds, 1 steal and freshman Won’ya Singleton added 14 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 1 block.
