Peninsula Holds Off Hoover

Peninsula beats Hoover High School in San Diego Tuesday night 65-54.

Senior guard Reese Morgan scored 32 points—and sank nine of 10 free throws—to lead Peninsula High School over favored Hoover High on Tuesday night in the CIF Division II state basketball playoffs in San Diego.

Sam Borst-Smith contributed 15 points as the Panthers held off the Cardinals 65-54.

Coach Jim Quick's team led 29-26 at halftime but pulled away in the third period, when it scored 21 points. Coach Ollie Goulston's Cardinals, who lost to defending state champion Lincoln in the section finals, ended the season at 26-8.

The Panthers boosted their season record to 29-2.

Foothill High School of Tustin—which upset No. 3 seed Mission Viejo 46-43—will travel to Peninsula for a second-round game at 7 p.m. Thursday.
