Barricaded Armed Suspect In Custody: Rancho Palos Verdes

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, CA – A man allegedly forced his way into his parents' Rancho Palos Verdes home Monday and fired several gunshots. He then barricaded himself in the backyard of a nearby residence before surrendering to a SWAT team hours later.

Deputies were sent to the seaside neighborhood shortly before 6 a.m. on a 911 call of a disturbance at a home in the 6400 block of Sealpoint Court, the sheriff's department reported.

According to Capt. Dan Beringer of the sheriff's Lomita Station, deputies were told that Paul David Carriere, 36, had "unexpectedly arrived at his parents' home and obtained a handgun. He began firing shots at some point, and family members inside the home were able to safely escape."

Carriere exited the home via a rear window, and was found by deputies in the 6500 block of Seacove Drive, after several calls were received regarding a man with a gun at that location, Beringer said.

"He was spotted by a sheriff's helicopter in the rear yard of a home, pointing a handgun at his temple," Beringer said.

Several nearby homes were evacuated, and a sheriff's SWAT team was summoned, along with a Crisis Negotiation Team. Following a standoff that lasted through the late morning, the SWAT team deployed "flash bang" grenades to distract him, and he then surrendered, the sheriff's department reported.

Carriere was booked on suspicion of various offenses, discharging a firearm in a negligent manner and burglary, the sheriff's department reported.
