PV Beats Redondo Union, Gears Up for Big Games This Weekend

Palos Verdes High lacrosse beats Redondo Union Wednesday in a 17-6 win.

Palos Verdes juniors Dean Dillenberg and Graham Francis each scored four goals to lead Palos Verdes lacrosse in a dominating performance over host Redondo Union on Wednesday in a 17-6 win.

The Sea Kings scored early, just 30 seconds into the match on a goal from Francis, and often, scoring 14 goals in the first half, to secure their 10th win in 11 games with just two games remaining in Bay League competition.

“Except for the Mira Costa game last week we have looked really good,” Palos Verdes coach Jimmy Borell said. “We are looking forward to the CIF playoffs and hopefully making some noise.”

Palos Verdes (12-2, 7-1) is currently ranked No. 8 by the CIF Southern Section Division 1 and has just two losses on the season to Bay League rival and No. 6 ranked Mira Costa and to the No. 7 ranked team Harvard-Westlake.

“We’re right there with the best I think,” Borell said. “I think that we can compete with the best teams around on any given day, we just have to play the type of game I know that we are capable of if we want to be successful in CIF.”

The Sea Kings showed that kind of dominance on Wednesday as they scored the game’s first four goals and were never seriously threatened by a clearly outmatched Redondo squad.

“We wanted to come out and jump on them early,” Dillenberg said. “We’re trying to get ready for CIF, so we are taking every game very seriously and we want to go into the playoffs on a roll.”

Dillenberg and Francis took turns scoring the game’s first five goals before another Sea King, senior Tommy O’Hern, got on the board. O’Hern also finished with four goals while teammate Cole Bender added three goals for the Sea Kings.

“We did some good things offensively,” Borell said. “I was happy with our performance today, I think this was a game that the guys could have took lightly but they didn’t they came out hard and did not let Redondo think they had a chance.”

Palos Verdes is on the road against Bay League rival Beverly Hills on Friday and then finishes up the season on Saturday against highly ranked Corona del Mar.

“Those games should be a big test to see where we are for the playoffs,” Borell said. “Beverly is good and Corona del Mar is one of the better teams around, so it will be a fun weekend and hopefully the kids will be up for the task.”
