Rancho Palos Verdes Public Safety Division Expected To Be Fully Operational By Summer

The LA County Sheriff's Department's duties in Rancho Palos Verdes are now being supplemented by the city's new Public Safety Division.

Rancho Palos Verdes' new Public Safety Division, which has already begun supplementing the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department in the city, is expected to be fully operational by the summer, according to city officials.

During the RPV City Council's April 7 meeting, the Public Safety Manager Jennifer Schmid said that the city's recently-formed public safety division would reach full operational ability by July 1.

The division, which has four field positions and two full-time non-field positions, will act as a "compliment" to Sheriff's Department services, not a replacement, Schmid said.

"By July 2026, all field staff should be fully trained and able to receive and respond to dispatched non-emergency calls for service from the Sheriff’s Department," the City said in a statement provided to Patch.

"With all four field positions staffed, the (Safety) Division continues to actively engage with the community and work closely with (the) Lomita Sheriff’s Station to monitor crime trends, implement traffic enforcement in targeted areas, safely manage free speech events, and coordinate road closures," according to the City.

In addition, staff have also been conducting neighborhood patrols in response to parking violations, speeding, loitering concerns, and other issues considered "quality-of-life" matters, the city said.

A goal of the division, according to the city, is to save on costs. Rancho Palos Verdes currently pays about $8.5 million to the Sheriff's Department annually for services. That's expected to rise to almost $9 million in the next fiscal year.
