♫It’s my birthday, it’s my birthday!♫ While I plan to indulge in some much needed R&R this week, I will be attending a few events around town this weekend. Birthdays are the perfect occasion to enjoy dinner at a new or favorite local restaurant; get pampered at one of our fabulous spas; splurge on a new outfit from one of the wonderful area retailers; play a round of golf; go for a sail; get together with friends for a craft brew or cocktail with a view of the ocean or simply spend time with a good book on the beach. There are an infinite number of fantastic ways to celebrate your special day the South Bay way!

El Segundo Recreation and Parks present The Gundo Comedy Festival which began yesterday, Wednesday, May 13 and will run through Sunday, May 17. The event features stand-up comedy and more at various locations around town. Venues include El Segundo Brewing Company Tap Room, Purple Orchid Tiki Bar, Old Town Music Hall and Teen Center among others. In addition to paid admission events, there are free shows, events for kids and free baby sitting on Saturday night provided for El Segundo residents by Parks and Rec. Attendees will see some of the best up-and-coming and well known comedians in the country performing right in El Segundo. DAS Entertainment presents the International Blues Show on Thursday, May 14 at Buffalo Fire Department. The event runs from 6 to 9 p.m. and features two head-liner blues bands; Igor Prado with Jai Malano and special guest, Joey Delgado; and Trickbag featuring Aki Kumar. Tickets are $17 per person and can be purchased at the door or online. Tickets are limited for this intimate showcase so get them while they last. The American Martyrs Parents Association presents the 42 annual Sophisticated Snoops Home Tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, May 15 through Sunday, May 17. Guest will have an opportunity to view six enchanting and unique homes located in Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach. Presale tickets are $30 and are available for purchase at various locations throughout the South Bay. Tickets will also be for sale at each of the homes for $35. Beginning May 15 through Sunday, May 17, the City of Torrance will pay tribute to the nation’s Armed Forces at the 56 annual Armed Forces Day Celebration and Parade – the City’s longest standing tradition. Each year, the city honors a different military branch; this year highlights the United States Coast Guard. Grand Marshal, Rear Admiral Joseph Servidio, Commander, Eleventh Coast Guard District, will lead the Parade on Saturday, May 16 beginning at 1:30 pm. The parade will include active National Guard and reserve military units from the five branches of the Armed Forces and military vehicles of all kinds including: armored personnel carriers, support vehicles and Abrams Battle Tanks. WalkAbout Redondo 2015 will be held on Saturday, May 16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Redondo Beach Parks & Recreation Building. The North Redondo Beach Business Association (NRBBA), working closely with its co-sponsor the Beach Cities Health District / Blue Zones Project, encourages local residents to participate in this unique community event. WalkAbout Redondo registered participants receive a “passport” and map of participating businesses, then walk the 2.8 mile Artesia Boulevard circuit to meet local businesses and collect “stamps” denoting they have visited each business. Raffle tickets are given based upon the number of businesses visited. During the entire event the NRBBA provides music, food and refreshments in the Parks & Recreation parking lot. The NRBBA and the Blue Zones Project are expecting 80+ businesses and 250+ walkers in this year’s event. Registration opens at 9 a.m. and is FREE to all participants. Registration is only accepted in person, on the day of the event. There is no online registration for this year’s event. Cancer Support Community-Redondo Beach (CSC-RB) will team up with the Redondo Beach Pier Association, Fly Buddha and The Green Yogi to present Yoga in the Octagon every third Saturday beginning May 16 and running through September 19. These free classes are an hour long and begin at 10 a.m. at the octagon below Kincaid’s. Instructors will lead a 60 minute all level yoga class while DJ Gadachy fills the air with motivating beats. All levels from beginner to yoga aficionados are welcome. Participants should bring a yoga mat, towel and water. The public is encouraged to invite a friend and join the fun to down dog, down shift and donate all in the name of CSC-RB’s mission of support, education and hope for cancer patients and their families. The El Segundo Public Library presents the popular Concerts in the Library series which runs from January through May. This free series is open to the public and features classical and jazz programs, as well as music from different ethnic traditions. The concerts take place in the Friends of the Library Room on the third Saturday of each month at 2 p.m. and will include light refreshments provided by the Friends of the Library. Registration for the event is FREE and opens at 9 a.m. Lunch begins at noon with the raffle scheduled for 2 p.m. This Saturday, May 16 features the music of Calico. The Manhattan Beach Chamber presents the second annual Bite at the Beach on May 16. This food and craft beer pairing event will take place at the MBS Media Campus in Manhattan Beach. The event takes place from 3 to 6 p.m. with a special VIP entrance beginning at 2 p.m. Now in its second year, Bite at the Beach aims to highlight culinary delights from around the South Bay and the many local, craft breweries. Guests will receive a plate and glass at the entrance and have the opportunity to enjoy as many tastes from the paired restaurants and breweries as desired. The King Harbor Yacht Club hosts the eighth annual King Harbor Sea Fair on Sunday, May 17 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. This free, family friendly event offers a unique opportunity to prepare for the summer boating season. Sea Fair promotes safe boating practices and environmental awareness, while highlighting recreational opportunities in our harbor. The event features over 60 local participating organizations, free outrigger canoe and sail boat rides, kid’s crafts and activities, stand-up paddleboard demonstrations, life jacket and safety show and a variety of boat and marine displays. Food and beverages will be available for purchase along with live music and a free raffle drawing with fabulous prizes. In addition, the Irving Johnson Tall Ship will be at this year’s event. Sea Fair attendees can tour the ship while she’s moored in the harbor for FREE! There will be several other events in and around the marina and a free shuttle with stops at KHYC, SEA Lab, Redondo Beach Yacht Club and attractions in between. Parking will be available at the AES parking lot located on Harbor Drive and is a short walk through the marina to the Sea Fair. Paid parking is also available in the Marina and in nearby city lots. The King Harbor Boating Foundation will host the first annual Sand Sculpting Contest on Sunday May 17 in conjunction with Sea Fair. This FREE event will feature mixed aged teams of eight members competing for prizes and bragging rights. Registration is from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and will be followed by an instructional workshop from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. Participants will have from 11:00 a.m. until 3 p.m. to create their sculptures. Prize categories include Best Overall, Most Creative and Most Energetic. If you don’t feel like entering the contest or have little ones, there will be a workshop area where you can practice and get tips from the pros. Space is limited and it is recommended you register online well in advance. The event will take place on the beach next to the Chart House in Redondo Beach. The Chart House is located at 231 Yacht Club Way in Redondo Beach. Ride in place – move charity forward! The third annual Tour de Pier is a unique fundraising event that brings one of the hottest indoor fitness activities – stationary cycling – to the Manhattan Beach Pier on Sunday, May 17. The Tour de Pier includes four 50 minute sessions beginning at 9 a.m. Participants can ride solo for all four sessions or be a team captain and recruit up to three teammates to register and ride as a team. In addition to the cycling portion of the Tour de Pier, the event will include a Health Expo with a number of fitness and health related sponsors; a Fun Zone with games, moon bounces and more. The Cardio Kid Zone will have the little ones bouncing and riding as well. They also have tot-sized stationary bikes for kids ages 3 to 8 can hop on for a few minutes and join in the fun. No registration necessary. The Kiwanis Club will host a complimentary Bike Valet adjacent to the Expo. The Bike Valet will open at 8:00 am and all bikes need to be claimed by 2:00 p.m. The Tour de Pier is organized to raise funds for the cancer community. The South Bay Police and Fire Memorial Foundation will host the annual South Bay Medal of Valor Awards & Luncheon on Wednesday, May 20 at the Torrance Marriot Hotel. The public is invited to attend the event which honors the South Bay law enforcement and fire protection agencies. The annual luncheon will recognize the conspicuous acts of bravery of our police officers and firefighters who selflessly serve and protect our communities. The event begins at 11 a.m. with no-host cocktails followed by the luncheon and awards at noon. El Segundo Police Chief and South Bay Police & Fire Memorial Foundation President, Mitch Tavera, is the Master of Ceremonies. KTLA News Anchor, Glen Walker, will be the Guest Presenter. The South Bay Go Red for Women Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, May 20 at the Manhattan Beach Marriot Hotel. The event draws more than 300 business leaders, executives, medical professionals and community activists with the goal of raising $500,000. The Luncheon is an empowering event that focuses on preventing heart disease and stroke by promoting healthy lifestyles and raising money to support awareness, education and research of heart health in women. It begins mid-morning with an array of activities including health screenings, educational breakout sessions and a silent auction. At noon, guest will enjoy a heart healthy lunch, personal testimonies by women who have successfully battled heart disease, and a dynamic keynote presentation.
