Surprising Findings In LA County Life Expectancy Study: See How Rancho Palos Verdes Compares

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, CA — People who live in Palos Verdes live about four years longer than the average Los Angeles County and California resident, a newly released study shows.

According to the study, which was funded in part by Los Angeles County and conducted by Measure of America, a division of the Social Science Research Council, the average life expectancy for Rancho Palos Verdes residents is 84.3 years, higher than the average in both LA County and California.

By comparison, the average life expectancy across all of LA County is 80.5 years, while the average expectancy for Californians as a whole is 80 years, according to the study.

Palos Verdes ranked 10th in the state for life expectancy. All of the top 10 cities were in Southern California, including Brentwood and Pacific Palisades (tied for first at 88 years), Palos Verdes Estates (87 years), Bel Air and Beverly Crest (tied at 86.1 years) and Manhattan Beach at 85.4 years.

Rounding out the top 10 were no. 5 Beverly Hills, followed by Rolling Hills Estates (85.9), Malibu (84.6), La Cañada Flintridge (83.4), Calabasas (85.1) and Rancho Palos Verdes.

City of Los Angeles residents were found to have a life expectancy of 81 years, according to the study.

"Through this report, we hope to build upon our roadmap and better understand the successes that have allowed us to expand our culturally responsive, community-based services, but also learn where we need to do more work and close gaps in outcomes," Lisa H. Wong, director of the county Department of Mental Health, said. "This report will guide us on how we design programs and allocate resources."
