• West Nile virus: Positive mosquito samples surge in SGV (heysocal.com) — West Nile virus activity has jumped above the five-year average across the San Gabriel Valley, which includes Pasadena, and officials are urging you to take extra precautions against mosquito bites this holiday weekend. Residents are asked to dump standing water, maintain pools and ponds, and use EPA-recommended repellents, especially at dawn and dusk, when the mosquitoes that spread the virus are most active.
   

• Dolly Parton fans: Regal Cinemas is bringing 2 of her movies to theaters (pasadenastarnews.com) — Pasadena moviegoers can catch two classic Dolly Parton films at Regal Paseo on Colorado Boulevard during six special screenings, with tickets set at a themed $9.25. All proceeds support Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, which sends free books to young children, making this a chance to enjoy nostalgic movies while backing early literacy.
