130-Year Bay Area Maritime Ritual Celebration This Weekend: 'Blessing Of The Fleet'

BAY AREA, CA — Crowds will line the waterfront Sunday as decorated vessels sweep through the Bay in a pageant of sea lore, civic tradition and nautical showmanship, reviving a ceremony that has endured wars, a pandemic and generations of sailors.

San Francisco’s boating season will open with cannon blasts, ceremonial blessings and a parade of myth-inspired vessels during the annual Opening Day on the Bay, a tradition organizers say remains one of the region’s defining maritime celebrations.

This year’s “Myths and Legends” theme invites boat owners to transform their vessels into floating tributes to folklore, seafaring legends and imaginative maritime tales. Some boats are expected to feature elaborate themed displays, while others will join the procession dressed in traditional flags and streamers.

Organized by the Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association for more than a century, Opening Day has marked the formal start of the Bay Area sailing season since 1917 under PICYA stewardship. The celebration has paused only during World War II and the 2020 pandemic.

This year’s committee boat will also mark 130 years of PICYA, adding another historic layer to a celebration that blends spectacle with deep-rooted maritime ritual.

The event begins with the Corinthian Yacht Club’s Blessing of the Fleet at 10:30 a.m., followed by the Decorated Boat Parade through Raccoon Strait and along the San Francisco waterfront.

Spectators can watch the festivities from Crissy Field to Pier 39. San Francisco Bay Adventures will be leaving Sausalito for an Opening Day brunch aboard Schooner Freda B. Other events will be happening around the Bay Area.

Any vessel may take part and PICYA membership is not required, but participants must register in advance and carry a marine radio. Boat parade registration is free.
