The initial investigation indicated the smoke detectors were removed from the residence, the Petaluma Fire Department said.

PETALUMA, CA — Two people and their pets were displaced Wednesday by an apartment fire in Petaluma.

Firefighters were dispatched at 6:31 p.m. Wednesday to reports of a structure fire in the 600 block of Galland Street and were on scene within 5 minutes, Assistant Petaluma Fire Chief Chad Costa said in a news release.

Two engines, a battalion chief and two medic units were dispatched. An engine from Rancho Adobe Fire District also arrived to provide support.

The first arriving crew members saw smoke coming from a small apartment behind the main residence and found a small fire burning in an exterior wall.

"The fire was quickly extinguished, allowing crews to contact the RedCross for the two displaced occupants and their pets," Costa said. "We are happy to report no injuries to the occupants, pets, or first responders."

Damage was estimated at $25,000; however, the fire department said much more was saved as the main structure remained untouched by the fire.

Investigators were still working to determine the cause of the fire but the initial investigation indicated the smoke detectors were removed from the residence, fire officials said.

"The Petaluma Fire Department would like to remind our residents that smoke detectors, fire alarms, and carbon monoxide alarms reduce injuries during emergencies and can save lives," Costa said. "Don't hesitate to contact the Petaluma Fire Department if you need assistance or guidance with determining the proper location or type of smoke alarm."
