It appeared someone intentionally set the fires, police said.

PETALUMA, CA — An investigation was continuing this week into two early-morning fires at Steamer Landing Park.

Officers were dispatched at 12:49 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, to a fire at the park and found a garbage can ablaze, Petaluma police Sgt. Matthew Parnow said.

The Petaluma Fire Department extinguished the fire.

Shortly after the fire was out, officers heard a small explosion coming from the opposite end of Steamer Landing Park and noticed a second garbage can was set on fire, Parnow said.

"Ultimately, it appears an unknown subject(s) intentionally set both garbage cans on fire," Parnow said. "Officers spoke to several people in the area who were unable to provide any information to further the investigation."
