2 Petaluma Teens Caught Street Racing; Arrested: Police

An officer who saw the two drivers racing on Ely Boulevard S. was able to overtake and stop them, Petaluma police say. (Breaking)

PETALUMA, CA — Two Petaluma teens were arrested Sunday when police allegedly caught them street-racing. Petaluma police said in a statement that just after 10 p.m. Sunday, an officer on patrol saw two cars stopped side by side for an "unusually extended period of time" in the northbound lanes of the intersection at Ely Boulevard S. and Caulfield Lane. The drivers of the cars then revved their engines and began accelerating at a "high rate of speed through the intersection."

The officer suspected the drivers — later identified as two males, both 16 years old and Petaluma residents — were engaged in an illegal speed contest. The vehicles sped up to about 50 mph before the officer was able to overtake and stop both the drivers in the area of Ely Boulevard S. and Weaverly Drive, police said.

Once contacted, both teens admitted they were street racing, police said.
