Taqueria Santa Cruz bringing Mexican street food to Petaluma
There was a time when the Cabrera family would park their truck on Payran or Maria Drive, and the smells coming from their mobile taqueria would instantly draw a crowd. Their operation featured not only the usual chicken, beef and pork tacos and burritos, but specialties such as tongue and cheek, common street fare in Mexico.
Today, Taqueria Santa Cruz—named for the family’s hometown in the Mexican state of Guanajuato—has grown into a full-fledged catering company with two trucks—one in San Rafael and the other parked on Lakeville Street and East Washington in Petaluma.
“Taco trucks have a fame…they even call them ‘roach coaches,’” says Roy Cabrera, the 24-year-old co-owner of Taqueria Santa Cruz, adding that the truck has a permit from the city to sell food. “I want to prove to the people and say ‘Hey, you know what? You’d be surprised about the type of food that comes out of here. So the next time you see us, stop by and give us a try.’”
