Barns as Gateways to Petaluma
The Davidson proposal would move the red barn. Ironic that, previously, a fake barn was proposed as being the landmark on the I St. Gateway
There is a great irony that has to do with the Red Barn. Most can agree that the Red Barn is a significant feature as one enters one of the Gateways to Petaluma. The barn is what catches our eyes as we prepare to leave or enter the city. It's been the iconic structure at this gateway for as long as any of us can remember.
In 2008, there was a battle between Pinnacle Homes and an I Street Coalition. Pinnacle and the residents managed to work out some issues with the developer. Pinnacle did try to blend the homes into the landscape. However, the residents did not agree that a proposed building would take the place of the view of the "great hill". The hill you see through the trees as you enter or leave the city.
There was great talk regarding that section of I St. as being one of the Gateways to Petaluma. A lot of talk. The "iconic" landmark that was going to be built at this gateway was a barn. A fake barn. A barn to house water pumps for some of the homes in the Pinnacle development.

D Street is a Gateway to Petaluma. We have a wonderful, historic building as a focal point. If the barn is moved, it needs to remain the focal point. Something to think about.
