Deebo The Baby Boy Giraffe Joins Safari West Roster
Here's how the big little guy born in October at Safari West came to be named after San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel.
SONOMA COUNTY, CA — A baby giraffe at Safari West in Sonoma County has been named Deebo in recognition of speedy San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel.
The bouncing, gangly baby boy giraffe was welcomed to the wild Safari West family on Oct. 6. Mother Nikki and Father Kubwa could not be prouder of their 117-pound bundle of joy.
However, like many parents, they could not agree on a name so the park needed the community's help to choose the perfect moniker for the big little guy. Safari West staff came up with six possible names, chosen to celebrate and honor its lofty, powerful, majestic giraffes. Community members voted and when the tallies were in, the winning name was Deebo.

"He’s gangly, energetic and decidedly up-tempo in his gait, chasing the cranes and just having fun like giraffes do," Safari West reported. "Deebo is sure to make a huge impression on our home 'roster' since a giraffe's feet are the size of a dinner plate, 12 inches across, while their legs are taller than most humans — about 6 feet — which happens to be the exact height of Deebo Samuel himself! With those stats, we’re confident he will be a popular addition to the Safari West team."
