Artist Statement – Karen Massing

Karen Massing is the female persona of artist Mike Felder.  For four years, I have traveled to various celebrations held by the International  Court System (ICC), one of the largest LGBT charity groups in the world.  During these travels, I focus on capturing members of the transgender community.  I have been moved by the beauty and pageantry of the ICC and strive to show it in every photograph.  My approach to capturing these ladies can best be described as “Making Special Ladies Look Extra Special”.

I have always enjoyed the “classical” approach to portraiture.  Last year, my son, Eric, started assisting me and with his help I have started to branch off into a more creative and campy photo-interpretation of female impersonation.  The nearly 40 years difference in age between us had resulted in young creative eyes teaching old creative eyes some new tricks.

When people view my work, I like them to see more than just the photograph.  The people represented are charitable contributors to many causes and boldly try to live their lifestyles in a world that still finds them different despite their ongoing advocacy for equality.  The four years I have spent among them has blessed me with new understanding, great respect and one heck of a wardrobe.
