JUST IN: U.S. Supreme Court Says Federal Constitution Gives Right To Same-Sex Marriage
The ruling today from the bench was 5 to 4.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled today that the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution provides a right to same-sex marriage. Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote the 5-4 ruling.
He wrote, “The right to marry is a fundamental right inherent in the liberty of the person, and under the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment couples of the same-sex may not be deprived of that right and that liberty.
The Court now holds that same-sex couples may exercise the fundamental right to marry.”
