5.8-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off NorCal Coast

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA, CA — Two large earthquakes, one a 5.8-magnitude and the other a 5.0- magnitude, struck Thursday morning off the coast of Northern California, the USGS is reporting. The first temblor within the Pacific Ocean struck at a depth of 7 miles at 8:39 a.m. about 100 miles west of Capetown and Ferndale, 135 miles southwest of Eureka and 290 miles northwest of San Francisco, the USGS says.

The second quake was recorded at 9:24 a.m. about 125 miles southwest of Eureka, at a depth of 6 miles within the Pacific Ocean.

Authorities with the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center in Alaska put out statements saying they are not expecting either earthquake to cause a tsunami along the coast of the Western United States, which includes Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and California.
