PETALUMA, CA – A man was found dead this morning from a suspected drug overdose, possibly from the pain medication fentanyl, on Lindberg Lane at Payran Street in Petaluma after his girlfriend called police, authorities said.

The Petaluma Police Department responded at 8:18 a.m. to the south side of Morris Distributing, across the street from the rear of Lucky supermarket on Lindberg, to assist the Petaluma Fire Department after a 30-year-old woman reported her boyfriend, also 30, was not breathing and had possibly overdosed on drugs, according to the Petaluma police.

The man, who was reportedly homeless and camping with the woman near the property, was declared dead at the scene, the department said.

The woman allegedly told officers that her boyfriend had purchased fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid pain medication many times stronger than morphine, Sunday evening and smoked it that night and possibly again this morning. Moreover, the woman said he overdosed in Marin County approximately two days earlier, but was revived by paramedics, officials said, although that fact is not confirmed.

The Sonoma County Coroner’s Office took custody of the body. A possible controlled substance was found in the decedent’s pocket but the substance has not yet been identified, police said.

There were no signs of foul play at the scene or to the body, and an autopsy is pending, officials said.

The Petaluma Police Department is familiar with the couple from previous contacts, but the decedent’s name is not being released until notification of kin by the coroner’s office.

Anyone with information concerning this case is asked to contact Detective Nick McGowan at 707-778-4456.
