Meet Petaluma Police Department's Newest Member Of The Force

PETALUMA, CA — The Petaluma Police Department has a new member of the force: Jax, an 18-month-old Belgian Malinois. Jax and his handler, Petaluma police Officer Jake Gutierrez, will be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week to the community and neighboring communities through a multi-agency collaboration, the Petaluma Police Department said Thursday in welcoming the new K9 unit.

Monday, Jax was officially welcomed to the city by Petaluma Mayor Teresa Barrett and her fellow City Council members.

Officer Gutierrez and his four-legged partner will be visible in the community through appearances at school functions, Petaluma PD's annual National Night Out and other community events.

Similar to previous Petaluma PD K9 members, Jax recently completed training for certification in handler protection, suspect apprehension, article searches and narcotics detection.

The Petaluma PD said it looks forward to a reduction in crime and an increased quality of life for the city as a result of the teamwork of Gutierrez and Jax.
