
PETALUMA, CA — The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office has identified the pedestrian who was killed by a vehicle in Petaluma Saturday night as 42-year-old Luis Picon-Estrada of Petaluma.
Picon-Estrada was struck by a Mercedes utility van around 11 p.m. near the Petaluma Library at East Washington Street and Fairgrounds Drive, Petaluma police said.
He suffered abdominal, head and chest injuries and died at Petaluma Valley Hospital, police said.

The Mercedes driver, Scott Compton of Sebastopol, admitted he had consumed alcohol earlier that evening and he was determined to be under the influence of alcohol, police said.
Compton was arrested and booked in the Sonoma County Jail for vehicular manslaughter and DUI. Witnesses did not believe Compton was driving faster than the posted 30 mph limit at the time of the collision, police Sgt. Ron Klein said.

Picon-Estrada was wearing dark clothing and crossed into the westbound lane in front of the oncoming Mercedes, police said.
