Petaluma Green Leaders Invite Crowds To Celebrate
Petaluma gathers to celebrate certified green businesses advancing sustainability and cost-saving practices.
PETALUMA, CA — A free community celebration will be held this month in Petaluma to highlight the environmentally friendly measures over a dozen local businesses in the city have taken to achieve one of California's highest green certifications.
California Green Business Certifications were awarded to 16 businesses in Petaluma for meeting standards around energy and water use, waste and pollution, and purchasing methods, according to a statement from the Sonoma County Executive's Office.
They will be celebrated with an event at Crooked Goat Brewing, at 110 Howard St., in Petaluma, on May 12 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The certifications are awarded by the California Green Business Program, a nonprofit organization that works at the city and county level to connect business owners with each other and with local government resources to help reduce their environmental impact, according to the organization's website.
The actions taken generally reduce pollution but also help businesses operate more cost effectively, according to the county. The program uses peer-to-peer connections to help business owners communicate what their industry needs to make green upgrades work, help connect them to local and county staff, and make the upgrades more efficiently as a cohort.

"Earning California Green Business Certification is a meaningful accomplishment," said county supervisor Rebecca Hermosillo. "These businesses are taking real, measurable steps to operate more efficiently and sustainably, while setting an example for others in the community."
The ongoing effort to get more businesses green certifications is being supported by the Sonoma County Energy and Sustainability Office, the city of Petaluma, and the grassroots organization Cool Petaluma, which advocates for environmental sustainability in multiple sectors, according to its website.
