Petaluma Homicide Victim Identified; Suspect Arrested

The suspect is from Santa Rosa and has an extensive record

Petaluma police have arrested a Santa Rosa man on suspicion of a fatal shooting Wednesday afternoon.

The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as 49-year-old Petaluma resident Arturo Hinojosa Jr. Police arrested Mikol Wayne Stewart, 37, on suspicion of homicide and burglary after Hinojosa was found shot in a residence in the 100 block of Suncrest Hill Drive in southwest Petaluma around 4 p.m., police Sgt. Ed Crosby said.

Police investigated the homicide throughout the night and identified Stewart as the suspect.

He was brought to the Petaluma Police Department and later booked into Sonoma County Jail, Crosby said.

Police said the investigation is continuing and there are no other suspects at large.

Stewart has prior convictions for felony and misdemeanor spousal batteries and misdemeanor DUIs, according to Sonoma County Superior Court records.
