Petaluma Man Arrested On Suspicion Of Backpack, Computer Theft

A man described as a transient was arrested Friday on suspicion of stealing a backpack and a computer from the Petaluma High School gym.

PETALUMA, CA — A man described as a transient was arrested Friday on suspicion of stealing a backpack and a computer from the Petaluma High School gym, police said.

Tyler J. Herrod, 27, was arrested in Putnam Plaza in downtown Petaluma around 5:30 p.m. Friday on suspicion of grand theft and probation violation. He was taken to the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility, according to police.

The case began around 10:45 a.m. Friday, when a suspect stole a backpack and computer from the gym and also entered the womens' room, police said. By the time officers arrived on campus, the suspect was gone.

Officers reviewed surveillance video from the campus and distributed photos of the suspect to other police, and an officer saw a man resembling the suspect in the video in Putnam Plaza around 5:30 p.m. According to police, the suspect had items in his possession believed to be stolen, and he allegedly confessed to the theft.
