Seniors Lose $315,000 In Four Scams In Sonoma County

PETALUMA, CA —Petaluma seniors lost more than $300,000 in four scams involving cryptocurrency, timeshares, and gift cards within 24 hours this week, according to police.

Petaluma police said officers responded to four separate scam reports within a 24-hour period this week, with seniors targeted through cryptocurrency, timeshare, and gift card schemes.

The suspected losses across the incidents totaled more than $315,000.

People age 65 and older make up more than 22 percent of Petaluma’s population, making the community especially likely to see scams targeting older residents, according to police.

The department urged residents to research anyone or any company requesting money before sending a payment.

Residents should ask questions, check with family members, and contact companies directly to confirm that payment requests are legitimate.

Scammers often claim their financial demands require immediate action. Legitimate organizations will not pressure people to pay on the spot, Petaluma police warned in a social media post.

Police said they share scam-prevention tips online and host presentations in person, but they also urged residents to help protect older members of the community.

Police said residents should check in with elderly neighbors and loved ones to help ensure they do not become the next victims.
