The driver allegedly fled the scene and tried to call a taxi, officers said.

SONOMA COUNTY, CA – A Petaluma man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a crash that critically injured his female passenger in unincorporated Sonoma County west of Petaluma on Saturday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Alan Arturo Tapia Ramirez, 20, was driving west on Skillman Lane east of Liberty Road around 10:25 a.m. when his 2013 Honda Accord went out of control off the east side of the road and struck an iron pipe fence, CHP officials said.

A 3-inch diameter pipe pierced the Honda's front undercarriage and impaled a 20-year-old Petaluma woman who was riding in the right passenger seat. The impact caused the Honda to overturn onto its roof, according to the CHP.
