Pile Driving for Petaluma's Floathouse. Finally!

Petaluma is about to get its first public boat rental facility. Piles will be driven in late September.

The pilings have been in Petaluma for a year now, waiting on dry land. Finally, they'll hit the water in the downtown turning basin, signaling the first steps toward Petaluma's first public boat rental center. The Petaluma Small Craft Center, a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit, has been working assiduously for years to put "butts in boats" year round. Finally, its first physical structure will rise from the water. On Tuesday, September 26th and Wednesday, September 27th, seven huge pilings, purchased with the help of a grant from the San Francisco Bay Area Water Trail, will be put in place with a vibratory hammer, much quieter than the typical drop hammer.

Spectators can best view this exciting downtown development from TAPS. Hours will be 7:45 am to noon, and again from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Throughout the pile driving operations, the City’s commercial docks will remain open to the public.

PSCC is best known for its Day on The River, held on the commercial docks in the turning basin on the first Sunday in June, with public access to everything from Hawaiian outrigger canoes to hydro-bikes to pedal kayaks and stand up paddle boards, and its extensive boating summer camps, held at the public docks (sailing) and North Bay Rowing Club (small craft summer camp).

The pile driving operation is the first phase of construction for The Floathouse Boat Rental Center, where PSCC will be able to rent out an equally wide variety of human powered water craft year round. The second phase in the summer or fall of 2018 will include the construction of nearly 170’ of dock and the rental office. The final phase will be the construction of a public restroom with shower at Cavanagh Landing Park, once rental operations have begun.

The Petaluma Small Craft Center builds community through boating on the Petaluma River. In addition to The Floathouse Rental Center, it is spearheading the construction of a Community Boathouse on the site of the River Front development, just north of the 101 highway bridge. Donations of any size will help finish building both of these facilities. Naming opportunities abound.
