PETALUMA, CA — A Petaluma home was deemed uninhabitable following a kitchen fire Wednesday morning, according to the Petaluma Fire Department. The house fire was reported at 9:12 a.m. on 5th Street, prompting police to shut down the roadway as firefighters from Petaluma and neighboring agencies responded to the emergency.

The first firefighters on scene reported smoke was coming from inside the house, said Kevin Weaver, interim-battalion chief for the Petaluma Fire Department.

Firefighters located the fire in the home's kitchen and extinguished the flames while also checking to make sure no people or animals were inside the home, Weaver said.

A ladder truck was used to ventilate the home of smoke, while fire prevention personnel arrived to investigate the fire which at that point, was still ongoing, according to Weaver.

Because there was extensive fire damage to the kitchen area and extensive heat damage throughout the remainder of the home, it was deemed uninhabitable for its occupants.

"Crews assisted the homeowner, who was not home at the time of the fire, with removing any salvageable items," Weaver said.

No injuries were reported to firefighters or civilians in Wednesday morning's incident.

Firefighters from Rancho Adobe, Sonoma , CAL Fire and Wilmar assisted the Petaluma Fire Department with the incident.

Petaluma police also responded and blocked access to 5th Street at the scene of the fire, which was between I Street and Mountain View Avenue, until about 12:45 p.m. Wednesday.
