Vandals Release 40,000 Salmon Raised by Casa Students
Organizers believe fishermen may have released salmon to attract bigger fish

United Anglers of Casa Grande, the well-known fish hatchery and creek-restoration program, suffered a major blow this week after someone cut open the holding pens, located in Tiburon, and released about 40,000 young salmon into San Francisco Bay, according to a Wednesday story in the Press Democrat.
The vandalism was discovered Tuesday, just weeks before students were set to release the chinook salmon at a public event at the Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies.
Organizers said that vandals approached the hatchery by boat and cut the zip ties on pens holding the fish that Casa students had painstakingly raised. The thieves left another pen with about 20,000 salmon, which will be released at the Oct. 30 ceremony.
Brooke Halsey, director of Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies, said that fishermen might have set the small salmon free to attract larger game fish.
