PETALUMA, CA - July temperatures have been brutal in many regions across the country, with heat indexes over 100 degrees and heat advisories issued in many states.

Forecasters are warning residents across the country to be vigilant and make sure not to spend too much time outdoors when temperatures are high.

"Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside," according to a weather service statement. "When possible, reschedule strenuous activities for early in the morning or in the evening."

Other recommendations from forecasters include wearing loose clothing and drinking plenty of water.

Energy companies are also offering their advice to residents who are plagued by the hot weather. To cut down on costs, it's best to run appliances in the morning and close the blinds to stop the sunlight from heating up a room. Keep the vents closed and doors shut in rooms that are not occupied.

  • Fru-ta, 279 N Mcdowell Blvd: Fru-ta has three locations throughout Sonoma County and uses no artificial flavoring or preservatives in their products. With over 36 flavors of ice cream, sorbet and yogurts, Fru-ta is the place to go if you like your ice cream all natural. The store is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
