Wookey for Congress

Matthew Wookey for the U.S. House of Representatives, 2nd District

My husband Matt Wookey is running for the U. S. House of Representatives, 2nd District. He is a great candidate for the job because of his dedication to service and motivation to change the broken political system. Matt devotes his life to service. He served two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer and currently, he is a history teacher at a public middle school. Besides his commitment to service, he wants to change a political system that is not helping the majority of the population and is hindering any potential for progress. Matt plans to create a brighter future for all. For voters to learn about and support Matt, I asked him the following questions below.

1. Tell me about yourself.

My name is Matthew Robert Wookey. I was born in San Francisco, lived in Fairfax until I was one, and grew up in San Rafael until I went away to college at the University of Oregon. After I graduated from Oregon with a degree in Anthropology, I worked at a department store for a couple of years before joining the Peace Corps. I spent 2 years in Georgetown, Guyana as a teacher of life skills education. Upon returning to the United States, I spent a season fighting wildfires with a company up in Oregon before returning to San Rafael. I started teaching at San Jose Middle School in Novato in 2004 and have been teaching US history to 8th graders there ever since. In 2009, I married Tatum Wilson whom I had met and fallen in love with in the Peace Corps. In 2012, our son Kaelum was born. In 2015, I decided to run for Congress.

2. Why are you running for the U.S. House of Representatives, 2nd District?

I have been very concerned about the dismal state of affairs in Washington, D.C. since I was back in high school. I spent years voting for what seemed like the lesser of two evils in most elections since then. I kept hoping that some leaders would arise that could turn things around in Congress, but these leaders never appeared and the situation in Congress has only worsened. When my son was born I knew I couldn't keep waiting for someone else to fix this mess, I had to try myself; for my son's future, for my students' futures, and for the future of all the children in America.

3. What do you hope to accomplish if elected as a congressman?

My long term goal is to eliminate poverty in America by 2050. Not an easy goal, of course, but I believe it is achievable. Before any progress toward that goal can be accomplished however, we need a Congress that works. We need a Congress that isn’t wracked by partisan strife and plagued by petty obstructionism. My initial focus, therefore, must be congressional reform.

4. Why did you decide to run with no party preference?

I have never been a member of any political party nor will I ever be. Partisan politics have crippled the legislative process in Washington. I am willing to work with anyone in Congress willing to be rational and put the good of the nation before themselves or their party.

5. Why should people vote for you?

I pledge to work tirelessly to lay the ground work for a brighter future. My focus will not falter and my loyalty to the people of this nation will be steadfast. I am beholden to them alone; no political parties, no lobbyists, and no billionaires.

6. How can individuals assist with your campaign?

I'm not accepting monetary donations because I want to run a campaign free from outside interests and financial motivations. My sole loyalty must be to the people. However, I do need volunteers. I need volunteers to complete the following tasks: to distribute flyers at various locations, to make calls to voters, to advertise on social media, and to spread the word to family and friends. If you're interested in volunteering, please contact me on the Wookey for Congress Facebook page.
