Three people, including an 84-year-old woman, were displaced by a fire early this morning that badly damaged a two-story Victorian house near the West Oakland BART station. The woman and two men, ages 56 and 57, were able to get out of the home on their own before firefighters arrived at the blaze in the 1000 block of Magnolia Street, Oakland fire Capt. Tracey Chin said.
The 84-year-old woman “looked pretty spry,” Chin said. The fire was reported at 12:43 a.m. and it was under control by 1 a.m., according to Chin. The two men live in the lower unit of the house, which is more than 100 years old, and the fire started there after one of them fell asleep while cooking, she said. The lower unit sustained the most damage and the upper unit where the woman lived mainly had smoke damage, Chin said.
The three residents will be displaced for a while but may be able to return to the house in a few days, according to Chin. She estimated that there was at least $50,000 in damage. No injuries were reported. The fire wasn’t as bad as it could have been, Chin said.

“We’re very fortunate that if the fire had to happen that everyone was evacuated in time and we were able to limit most of the damage to the lower unit,” she said.
