A Dozen Local Nonprofits No Longer Tax Exempt

The Camp Augusta Trust Fund and the Piedmont Playfields Foundation are among those stripped of tax-exempt status by the IRS.

The Internal Revenue Service announced last week that it had revoked the tax-exempt status of 275,000 nonprofit organizations, including a dozen with Piedmont addresses.

According to the IRS website, “Most tax-exempt organizations are required to file an annual return or notice with the Internal Revenue Service.” An organization’s tax-exempt status is automatically revoked if it fails to satisfy filing requirements for three consecutive years.

A June 8 report in the New York Times explains that the IRS action has reduced the nation's nonprofit sector, "by roughly 17 percent, to about 1.3 million charities, trade associations, membership groups and labor unions.”
