Anian Tunney Discusses 7 Places that Pay You to Live There

Anian Tunney Piedmont CA Real Estate Agent discusses a Kiplinger Report article about places in the US that offer incentives to residents.

Living in the Bay Area we are used to a very high cost of living because of the beautiful surroundings and climate, as well as the fantastic job market full of high paying jobs in cutting-edge industries like technology and bio-tech. Kiplinger (1) came out with a report earlier this year about seven places in the United States that offer tax breaks and other incentives to live there. It’s interesting to compare the available lifestyles in other places to the Bay Area.

Some of the incentives offered in these other locations include housing allowances, student loan reimbursements, free home lots, and tax rebates. People who may want to consider a change like this are young people just starting out, or people who are ready to cash out of the Bay Area and have a quieter lifestyle.

For example, Harmony Minnesota offers a as much as a $12,000 cash rebate for families and individuals who build a new home. Lots with full services sell for $10,000 to $15,000, so it would almost be like receiving a free piece of land. New Haven Connecticut offers home purchase down-payment assistance and free in-state college tuition.

Niagara Falls, NY offers student-loan reimbursements to attract young people to it’s downtown area, while Detroit, Michigan offers cash and loans for renters and new homeowners who work at specific companies and purchase homes in selected neighborhoods. The entire state of Kansas offers tax waivers and student loan reimbursements for people who live in specially designated Rural Opportunity Zones.

Alaska pays annual mineral royalty dividends to all residents. In 2014 the payment was $1,884 per person. Curtis, Nebraska, a very small town with a population of just over 800, and declining more than 1 percent annually will provide a free lot to build your new home.

While these financial incentives may not be the main reason a family decides to move to a location, they can be an added incentive for those just starting out or looking for a quieter lifestyle.
