Anian Tunney Discusses the AARP Livability Index report

Find out your community's Livability Index Score here

AARP’s Livability Index report was recently presented by Dr. Rodney Harrell as part of the National Association of Realtors University Speaker Series.(1) According to the article, by the year 2030, 70 million people in the United States will be age 65 and over. The Livability Index measures such attributes as housing accessibility, options, affordability, safety, commitment to livability, and convenient transportation options, among many others.

The question Dr. Harrell asks is, what is a livable community, and how do we measure one?(2) According to a survey of older adults, the areas where their communities could improve the most were in increased police presence, improved schools, make streets more pedestrian-friendly, provide better transportation options for older adults and those with disabilities, and build or upgrade parks.

How are livability scores determined? (3) The Livability Index includes seven categories: housing, neighborhood, transportation, environment, health, engagement and opportunity. Each category receives a score from 0-100 and the totals are averaged to determine the over-all livability score for a community.
