Anian Tunney Piedmont CA Real Estate Agent Shares Kiplinger Report's Recommendations for Items to Add to Your Emergency Kit

“With El Nino expected to bring a lot of heavy weather to the Bay Area this winter, being prepared by updating your emergency kit is a great idea,” comments Anian Tunney, Piedmont CA Real Estate Agent Broker Associate. “Bottled water, non-perishible food, batteries and flashlights should always be kept on hand,” Anian goes on to say.
Other recommended items from the Kiplinger Report article (1) include:
Portable Power Pack--the Duracell Powerpack 1300, which sells for about $200, is a great example. This portable power pack puts out 600 watts of power through one DC socket and two grounded AC outlets, and it also has 2 USB ports. It is great for charging laptops and cellphones, it has a bright light, an air compressor and detachable jumper cables.

Mini Generator--if you want something more heavy-duty, the DuroStart DS4000S, which is about $330, is a gas-powered generator that can run your refrigerator. It has a 4 gallon fuel tank and weighs 92 pounds.
Hand Crank Radio--even if your batteries die, you can still have a radio to listen for emergency broadcast system announcements, such as flood warnings in your area. Eton’s American Red Cross FRX3 Hand Crank Weather Alert Radio costs about $50, has a smart phone charger, a rechargable battery, can run on 3 AAA batteries, or you can crank the handle for a minute to get 10-15 minutes use of the radio and flashlight.

Battery-Operated TV--maybe not needed for short emergencies, if you already have a hand crank radio or the portable power pack, but for longer power outtages or in rural areas, the RCA DPTM70R 7-Ince LED-Lit TV, at $80 on Amazon will keep you in touch with local news, or keep the kids entertained during an extended power outtage.
Rechargable Lanterns--safer than candles and more usable than flashlights, the Coleman Quad LED Lantern, about $46, charges four lights at a time, which can be detached from the base and used in different rooms and runs for up to 75 hours. The base uses eight D-cell batteries.
Portable Water Purification System--as a backup to keeping fresh bottled water on hand, for an extended emergency or for living in rural areas, the Katadyn Combi portable water filter costs about $220, with a faucent-mount adapter for around $65, is very portable and is capable of purifying 1 liter of water per minute.
Plug-In Phone--when the power is out over a wide area, cell phones usually don’t work, and the ability to call 911 from a landline becomes imperative if you have a medical emergency. Also be sure to check with your phone service provider to make sure that your phone line will work during a power outtage.
To conclude, as we know from living in earthquake-prone California, its not a matter of “if we have an emergency” but “when we have an emergency.” The authorities have made it very clear to expect severe weather this winter, and the more self-sufficient we are, the more safely and securely we can get through an emergency, giving us peace of mind and keeping our family safe.
