Anian Tunney Shares Reasons San Franciscans Are Moving to the East Bay in Greater Numbers
Piedmont CA real estate agent Anian Tunney discusses the SF Chronicle report that more San Franciscans are purchasing homes in the East Bay.

East Bay real estate brokers, including Anian Tunney, Piedmont CA real estate agent, are finding that current San Francisco residents make up 25 to 30 percent of home shoppers in the East Bay (1). This impression is supported by statistics reported by the Internal Revenue Service, which shows that th between 2006 and 2012 there was a 42 percent increase in households moving from San Francisco to Alameda and Contra Costa counties.
“There are a lot of very appealing and desirable neighborhoods and districts in the East Bay that are drawing the attention of San Franciscans looking to purchase their first home, or move up to a larger home for their growing family,” Anian states. “For example, the Grand Lake district has easy access to BART, and a vibrant pedestrian friendly shopping area. Eastmont Hills and Montclair district have homes with backyards and fruit trees starting in the mid-six figures.” With the median home price in San Francisco for any type of residential property at $1.1 million, this is indeed a big draw.
With this greater competition, prices are starting to increase at a higher rate in Oakland and surrounding communities. For example, in 2009, the median price in Richmond was $166,000, and now it is $379,000, a 274 percent increase, but still affordable for singles and families, with convenient access to BART for commuting to San Francisco for work and social activities. Other hot neighborhoods in Oakland include Temescal, Uptown and Jack London Square. One of the homes for sale in Piedmont, one of the very desirable districts in the East Bay is 58 Crest Road, offered at $2,128,000.
