Havens Students Make Blankets for Children's Hospital

On Tuesday, September 1, the Havens Community Service Crew kicked off its first after-school activity of the school year. Benefiting Children’s Hospital Oakland’s teen patients, the project consisted of making fleece blankets and decorating place mats and bookmarks. With almost 40 kids and a handful of parents, the large group had to move locations to accommodate the wonderful turnout.
The majority of the students enthusiastically worked away on the blankets; laying fabric, cutting fringe, and tying off ends. While working, some were so excited about making the blankets that they discussed and requested specific fabrics for the next time the Crew does this project! Other students designed beautiful place mats and bookmarks with heartfelt drawings, sticker collages and messages. Within the hour, the productive bunch made five cozy fleece-tie blankets and a large stack of place mats and bookmarks.
Some kids were so inspired from the afternoon that they went home and worked on their own blankets. A few even arrived the next day with miniature versions. All in all, it was a successful, spirited and fun event. Thanks to everyone for their time and exceptional service!
