Coroner Releases Names of 2 Transients Found Dead Near Lake Merritt
Initial reports indicated that foul play was not a factor in their deaths.

The Alameda County coroner’s bureau has released the names of two transients found dead in an Oakland homeless encampment Tuesday evening. Thomas Bartells, 57, and Kathrin Bartells, 53, were believed to be transients.

The coroner was unable to confirm the relationship between the two decedents, who shared a last name. Thomas and Kathrin Bartells were camped near a parking lot under Interstate Highway 580 on Lake Park Avenue between Grand and Lakeshore avenues, according to police. Officers responded to the scene around 5:10 p.m. Tuesday.
