DUI Arrests in Alameda County Down 30 Percent During Year-End Crackdown

DUI arrests in Alameda County decreased roughly 30 percent this year compared to last year during the county’s 21-day year-end DUI crackdown campaign, Hayward police officials said Friday.

From 12:01 a.m. on Dec. 12, 2014, through midnight on Jan. 1, 2015, law enforcement officials from 21 county agencies arrested 289 people on suspicion of driving under the influence, police said. That was down from the 415 DUI arrests made during the same time frame last year, according to police. Deaths increased threefold, however.

Police said provisional results from the Alameda County coroner’s bureau revealed there were three DUI-related deaths this year, compared with one last year during the year-end campaign. Regional law enforcement agencies will be conducting more DUI operations throughout the county on Super Bowl Sunday in February and St. Patrick’s Day festivities in March, among others, police said.

According to police, those operations include sobriety checkpoints, special “saturation” patrols, and routine patrols.
