Elderly Pedestrian Struck, Killed by Van in Chinatown

The van driver, a man whose name also is being withheld, remained on scene and was cooperative, police said.

An elderly male pedestrian was killed when he was struck by a van while crossing a street in Oakland’s Chinatown District this morning, police said. The collision occurred at the intersection of Seventh and Franklin streets, a block from Oakland police headquarters, at 8:15 a.m. Friday.

Police said their preliminary investigation indicates that the man was walking across Seventh Street in the crosswalk when he was struck by a van that was traveling eastbound on Seventh Street. Paramedics took the man to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. His identity is being withheld pending investigation. The van driver, a man whose name also is being withheld, remained on scene and was cooperative, police said.

The incident is still being investigated and Oakland police are asking anyone with information about it to call their traffic investigation unit at (510) 777-8570.
