Fantastic Food Bank Feats!
Havens students collect and bag thousands of items for Alameda County Community Food Bank
Havens Community Service Crew would like to thank Havens Elementary School students for their amazing can drive and volunteer efforts! Students held a canned food drive on campus and collected 10 barrels of donated food for Alameda County Community Food Bank. That 1705 pounds of food can serve 1415 meals to needy families.
The food drive culminated with a Havens Family Night at the Alameda County Community Food Bank on the night of May 28. 77 Havens volunteers including Principal Anne Dolid bagged 5127 pounds of apples and 3037 pounds of nectarines over a 2 hour period. The kids wouldn’t stop working and wanted to clean out the donation bins. When asked who had fun, every participating student and parent raised a hand. Some asked if we could do it again next year - two or three times, please!
All of this donated and bagged food total 8190 meals to be served to area needy - one in five of all county residents. And that doesn’t even include all the 5th grade field trips to the food bank and the 2nd grade bake sale which benefitted the Backpack program through the food bank.
