Fender, er, Wing Bender at Oakland Airport

A Southwest Airlines plane departing from Oakland International Airport clipped the wing of another aircraft while backing out of a gate on Sunday night, Southwest officials said.

The wing of the airplane operating Flight 2674, which was headed to John Wayne Airport in Orange County, was backing out of the gate at about 10:30 p.m. when its wing came into contact with the wing of another Southwest aircraft, according to airline spokeswoman Alyssa Eliasen.

No injuries were reported on either aircraft, Southwest officials said.

According to Eliasen, passengers were offered flight vouchers and were re-accommodated on other flights. Both planes were taken out of service and will undergo a maintenance check, according to airline officials.

“Safety is our number one focus and we are conducting an internal review to identify details surrounding (Sunday’s) event,” Eliasen said.
