Helping Out in Our Community

Haven's Elementary Students Volunteer at St. Vincent de Paul

In February, Havens students and 5th grade teacher Ms. Wallis volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul in Oakland. A huge bin filled with clothes donations was the center of our project. Children age two to ten helped sort and fold the clothes by age as well as create diaper packs for clients.

Students learned that some families don’t have enough money to buy new clothes as their children get older and grow bigger. St. Vincent de Paul offers them services to get to the next paycheck or the next job. The organization also receives many donations but without the help of volunteers the donations may never be used by those who need them.

In the short time we were there, we emptied the bin, allowing for more donations to come in and these donations to be distributed properly. The kids could see the effect of their effort as the climbed into the bin for one last photo!
