Jazz at the Chimes Kicks Off 2015 Season
Local Jazz series "Jazz at the Chimes" features the Erik Jekabson Quintet as it's first concert of 2015.
JAZZ AT THE CHIMES welcomes brilliant trumpeter Erik Jekabson and his quintet Sunday, January 18, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Chapel of the Chimes, 4499 Piedmont Avenue, Oakland.
Jekabson has been on the Bay Area jazz scene for over two decades in various musical incarnations as both a bandleader and sideman. He’ll be center stage at the upcoming Jazz at the Chimes concert, held in the visually stunning, acoustically vibrant Chapel of the Chimes. On this date, he brings his quintet to present some straight-ahead jazz, including some of his own compositions.
Jekabson has played at the Chimes before, but as a sideman to the great vocalist Kenny Washington. Many who heard him were impressed by his tasteful approach to the music, his inventive improvisations and his exquisite tone. This concert will be an opportunity to present some of his own compositions with a stellar band that includes Kasey Knudsen on saxophone, Matt Clark on piano, John Wiitala on acoustic bass and Hamir Atwal on drums.

Jekabson’s youthful appearance belies his vast experience in the professional jazz and music world. A graduate of the Berkeley High jazz legacy, Jekabson went on to complete a Bachelor of Music focused on jazz trumpet performance at Oberlin Conservatory of Music. He followed that up with a Masters of Music in composition from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He currently leads several ensembles, and has brought them to the Stanford Jazz Workshop, the DeYoung Museum, the SFJazz Center and Kuumbwa Jazz, to list a few. He’s toured and recorded extensively and is also a sought-after educator who currently heads the Jazzschool Young Musicians Program.
The concert at Chapel of the Chimes, Oakland on January 18 will be followed by a reception where the public can meet the Erik and the musicians, purchase CDs and enjoy refreshments.
