Returning for Summer 2015!
Farm to Table Journey - Students begin a journey from their own dinner table to local Bay Area farms and into the PHS kitchen to create farm to table meals. During their two weeks, they will explore farming, seasonality, economics and agriculture politics that inspire sourcing great food locally. They will visit local farmers such as: Alexis Koeford at Soul Food Farms in Vacaville, Farmer Al at Frog Hollow Farm in Brentwood to source ingredients. At the end of each week, participants will prepare for their own farm to table meal and share with local people in need.

Math for All - Students will learn how to engage with children using active and prepared math lessons, and then present their own multi-‐sensory lessons to Oakland youth, ages 5-‐12. Time will be split between the classroom at PHS and teaching/volunteering. Students will explore the various ways in which children from all backgrounds move at their own pace from the concrete to the abstract while learning math. Kinesthetic learning will be emphasized. Mindfulness, leadership, and empathy are just some of the intangible goals of this one-‐week course. Discussions of how economic inequities can affect educational outcomes will be discussed, including how their participation in this program can make a difference.
New for Summer 2015!
East Bay Community Development - Join a small, dedicated group of inspired educators in Oakland as they prepare the next generation of community leaders. During this AISCE session discover the vibrant people who make up the Oakland International community and be inspired by their work. Students will volunteer at the Oakland International Community School by participating in neighborhood summer programs while learning about the history of community development. Participants will work directly with elementary students 3 hours a day, honing their leadership skills needed to support these critical educational programs. Utilizing Oakland’s rich resources students will investigate the historical demographics of the East Bay, explore culturally significant sites like Peralta Hacienda and Mission Dolores and develop a deeper understanding of the East Bay that is key to successful community development. Most importantly, students will be helping to support and shape future East Bay communities and inspire the leaders of tomorrow.
To Have and Have Not: Exploring Issues of Urban/Suburban Disparity - In this AISCE program, our time will be divided evenly between the PHS classroom and the local summer programs run in the East Bay. Our time in the classroom will be spent reading and discussing articles, essays, films, podcasts, and speeches. Our time outside of the classroom will be active time spent playing games and sports with kids. Students will have no required homework. They just need to show up with a positive attitude, ready to learn and give back to the community.
