Oakland Active Shooter: Man Armed With Rifle Dies Following Police Shooting

The scene is not yet secure, according to the CHP.

OAKLAND, CA — A suspect who was allegedly armed with a rifle and shooting at police and his neighbors homes died Friday evening, hours after he was shot by a police officer, Oakland PD confirms.

Officers responded to the 9500 block of Las Vegas Avenue around 9:05 a.m. when the suspect in the street began shooting at officers, police said. Officers reported the suspect was armed with a rifle and scope and immediately sought cover.

"The suspect continued to discharge the rifle, firing multiple times. An Oakland officer discharged his firearm, but it is unknown if the suspect was hit," police said. "Eventually the suspect was detained, transported to a local hospital with report of injuries, and is currently receiving medical attention. Officers recovered the rifle with a scope from the scene."

"We had our hands full, this was a very dangerous situation," Oakland police spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson said. "We have a lot of traffic that comes through the area we also have a lot of schools in the area."

Students at nearby Bishop O'Dowd High School were told to shelter in place and stay away from the south side of the campus during the encounter. Barack Obama Academy, a charter elementary school nearby, was
evacuated.

There have been no reports of injuries to officers or community members at this time. The area of 98th Avenue and Golf Links Road remains closed to through traffic as the Oakland Police Department continues their investigation. Police have not identified the suspect.

The CHP had closed eastbound Interstate highway 580 - but it has now reopened.
